Dear Student and Parent,

El Dorado Adventist School, as a Christian school, is dedicated to upholding Christian standards of respect for our God, for one another, and for ourselves. We desire that our students be empowered to “do all things through Christ” who will enable them.

EAS has a strong history as being a safe campus, where the physical and emotional safety of each child is protected. EAS is a campus where students and faculty highly respect one another. It is one of my highest priorities to continue the tradition of physical and emotional safety for each child. When this is accomplished, learning can happen, full character can develop, and children can grow.

In order for our students to succeed, there must be guidelines. In this booklet, you will find the basic guidelines that all students are expected to abide by. Please read it carefully so that you understand the expectations that accompany enrollment as a student at EAS. The teachers consider it an honor to be entrusted with your children.

Sincerely,

Larry Ballew
Principal

S t u d e n t   P a r t i c i p a t i o n
Students should arrange their schedules so that full participation in all planned and prepared programs is possible. Schedule conflicts need to be discussed with the appropriate administrator before an appointment is missed.

P a r e n t – S c h o o l   R e l a t i o n s h i p
Parents of El Dorado Adventist School students are always welcome on campus. Parents are strongly encouraged to communicate with the school faculty, staff or administration whenever deemed necessary.

H e a l t h   R e c o r d s
State law requires that health records must be complete before a student can attend class. Each student is required to have a complete medical examination at least once during the high school years. If you have had an examination since enrolling in high school, please forward the results to us. All new students must have a complete physical examination.

If the school determines that you are not current with any required immunization your record will be considered incomplete. You will not be asked to provide immunization information if you submit a written statement from a physician stating that you are medically exempt or if the parents of a student submit a signed statement indicating that you are exempt because of personal beliefs.

I l l n e s s   P o l i c y
If a student should have an extended illness or a communicable disease of an acute or serious nature while at EAS, the student will be allowed to remain at school only temporarily, pending other arrangements for care for the duration of the illness.

As a student, you are covered under an accident insurance plan. The plan provides coverage for any injury while you are under the care and direction of the school, and travel to and from school. This insurance is primary for the first $100 of loss.

Since the policy is an economical student accident insurance policy, there are limitations on the insurance coverage available for student accident claims. A statement of coverage will be mailed at the beginning of the school year to parents. Parents need to review the statement for claim filing procedures, policy limitations, and policy exclusions. Students are responsible for promptly reporting any injury to the School Office.

Compensation Insurance
Compensation insurance coverage is provided for all students and faculty members while at work. To be eligible, you must report any injury first to a teacher or staff member within 24 hours. Parents need to sign a release form on or before registration day permitting the insurance company to make direct payment to the attending physician or hospital.

Phone Use
A payphone is available in the Office for student’s use.

Medication at School
In order for a student to take medication at school the following is needed:

D i s c i p l i n e
El Dorado Adventist School understands that children will make mistakes and that they can learn from them. For this reason, a discipline plan is in place to be used as a guide when necessary. The goal of discipline is to lead the student toward self-control and self-discipline. Some of EAS’s disciplinary procedures include, but are not limited to, loss of privileges, special duty, detention, fines, confiscation, restitution, reassignment, suspension, and dismissal from school.

Each category includes but is not limited to the outlined items.

In general, students are warned more than once about minor infractions before a referral is issued. Staff members are asked to notify other teachers after warning a student, and follow up with a behavior referral if the situation persists.

A t t e n d a n c e
The classroom experience is a critical part of a student’s education. While makeup work can be done, it is not equivalent to lectures, discussions, and classroom activities. In order for the faculty to do the best possible job of educating the students entrusted to them, the student needs to be in regular attendance.

A successful educational program requires the cooperation of the parents or guardians, the student, and the school faculty at all points in the process. In recognition of the importance of: (a) showing respect for the student’s teachers and classmates; (b) recognizing the fundamental rights of parents/guardians; (c) students acquiring time management skills necessary for success in our highly time-dependent society; and (d) enabling planning and clear communication, the school has instituted the following attendance policy.

Course Work Makeup
The student is responsible for course work missed while absent. In the event that it is not feasible to make up work missed while absent, an alternate project will be assigned in place of the work missed. All teachers will make every reasonable effort to facilitate the student’s completion of work missed (or alternate project) while absent. The nature of the makeup work and completion date is at the teacher’s discretion. Because the objective of this policy is to promote learning, grades for makeup work will not be marked down simply because it was “made up,” and will be treated the same as if it had not been missed. While full credit is always possible, parents/guardians and students are both reminded that a teacher’s facilitation of the student’s completion of missed work (or alternate project) will neither enhance nor detract from the grade received for said work, as the student remains responsible for earning their own grades.

Eligibility for Course Work Makeup
1.                  Excused AbsenceCalifornia State Law provides for excused absences due to illness, quarantine, medical appointments, or death in the immediate family. Students should present illness-related notes promptly.
2.                   Prearranged AbsenceIt may be necessary and/or desirable for a student to be absent from school for the purpose of educational travel or family matters. When absences are pre-planned, a “Prearranged Absence” Form is to be submitted by the parent or guardian at least fourteen (14) days before the absence will occur. The application for a prearranged absence is not complete without the student and/or parent/guardian conferring briefly with each of the student’s teachers, either personally or in writing. The request will be reviewed by the Academic Committee and may be disapproved if it is believed such absence is likely to result in the student being unable to successfully complete the course with a passing grade.
3.                  Administrative Absence: Absences in this category are due to off-campus school or church activities, including but not limited to: academic field trips, tours by performing organizations or sports teams, retreats or conferences, mission trips, etc, and are administratively excused. These absences do not count toward the total number of missed class periods that may jeopardize a student’s opportunity to receive credit.
4.                   Unexcused Absence: Student absences not satisfying the requirements listed above are unexcused. While teachers are not obligated to facilitate or accept the makeup of work missed due to unexcused absences, they may do so at their discretion.

Tardy
Meeting commitments on time is an important characteristic to develop. By being on time to classes, students are showing that they are developing this impart character trait. A student not present and in their place at the beginning of a class may be marked tardy. Students arriving more than fifteen (15) minutes late may receive an absence.
K-8                 Three (3) tardies will equal one-half (1/2) day absence
9-12                Three (3) tardies for a class or chapel will be recorded as one (1) absence for the class

Truancy
Students absent when faculty and parents/guardians are not aware of the students whereabouts are truant. Such absences will be recorded as an unexcused absence and truant students may be subject to additional disciplinary consequences.

Loss of Credit
K-8      One (1) absence is recorded for each day missed. Acquiring more than twenty-seven (27) absences for any reason in a year requires the parent or guardian to meet with the homeroom teacher and principal and may result in repeating the grade level.

9-12     One (1) absence is recorded for each single class period or chapel and two (2) absences are recorded for each block class period missed. Acquiring more than fourteen (14) absences for any reason in a semester requires the student and parent or guardian to meet with the Academic Committee and may result in loss of credit for the class for the semester.

W o r k   P r o g r a m
Student Labor is an integral part of the total school program at El Dorado Adventist School. It not only helps to defray the costs of the student’s account, more importantly it helps to teach responsibility, self-reliance, work ethics and the value of a job well done.

EAS will do all it can to find employment for all students who want to work. There are several on campus work opportunities and some off campus options.
Job Assignments
Job placement will be decided based on age, ability, availability and experience. Job assignments, transfers and terminations are to be made through the Principals Office.
Termination
If a student is terminated from his/her job or transfers without authorization, he/she will severely jeopardize work experience credit as well as future ability to receive positive job recommendations. In the event of termination, a student will not be eligible for another job assignment for at least 30 days.
Age Requirements
State and Federal law require that students 14 and 15 years old may work a limited schedule, not more than 3 hours a day and not more than 15 hours during the school week. Students over 16 years of age may be allowed to work more hours but not more that 4 hours during a school day.
Work Program Grievance Policy
Students are encouraged to work with their work supervisor to achieve a mutually satisfying work environment.

S c h o o l   P r o p e r t y
A.     Service rooms, tunnels, storage rooms/closets, or any building that is not opened by a staff member and properly supervised is off limits.
B.     Students may not use maintenance/grounds tools and machinery unless directed and authorized by a staff member.
C.     If school property is damaged, the student will be charged the actual amount of repair. Any damage must be reported immediately or an additional penalty will be added. (Deliberate damage is vandalism.)

S e a r c h   P o l i c y
A school search policy for students at EAS is on file in the School Office. The policy is designed to balance the privacy of the individual student while allowing school officials to maintain a safe environment for all students.

L i b r a r y
1.                  The library facilities are for study and research. The library is not a place to visit with friends.
2.                  Students may be charged for materials taken without authorization.
3.                  No food or drinks are allowed in the Library
4.                  Students must have staff supervision at all times when using the Library

A faculty sponsor must coordinate all student committees, officers’ meetings, and group music practices. Most clubs and classes have assigned faculty sponsors. Any activity or program must be planned in conjunction with the faculty sponsors. Activities not done in a routine manner must be approved by the administration after the student leaders and sponsors for the organization have developed their ideas.
